Both of Spokane’s approved charter schools moved a notch forward with plans last week. Pride Prep met with prospective students, and the Spokane International Academy won approval of its contract. Both plan to open in Fall 2015.
Wednesday night the Spokane Public Schools board unanimously approved the International Academy contract, mimicking the contract for Pride Prep. The five year agreement requires the school be governed by a board, that it meet the basic state curriculum and student assessments, and operate a calendar approved by the district.
Both schools have received more student interest than they have spots available, so they’ll conduct a student lottery. Thursday, Pride Prep held an open house for students already lottery-enrolled. Enrollment for both schools is due February 25th, and the lotteries take place March 2nd.
Pride Prep will focus on leadership, and the International Academy emphasizes knowledge of the world, catering to both English and non-native speakers.
