Environmental Group Pushes For No-Emissions Economy and Transportation

A Washington environmental organization says the state has the capacity to meet all of its energy needs with renewable energy sources. The report issued Thursday by the Environment Washington Research and Policy Center also says the state is fully capable of creating a system of emissions-free vehicles, including electric cars, trucks and buses.

The organization’s Amanda Tracy spoke at a press conference in Spokane. She says state policy makers could take at least three steps to move Washington toward an emissions-free system.

“This includes setting strong and enforceable renewable energy goals, expanding our existing electric vehicle charging infrastructure across the state and removing any barriers to electric vehicle ownership, including Washington’s $100 annual electric vehicle registration fee,” Tracy said.

Tracy also encouraged Spokane officials to do more. They include installing more electric vehicle charging stations and using renewable energy sources to power municipal buildings and vehicles.

The organization urges faster adoption of renewable energy sources as solar and wind. It doesn’t appear to include hydro power as part of its strategy.
