Idaho Secretary of State

Nearly all of the precincts have reported in Idaho's primary election.

In the Republican race for governor, Lieutenant Governor Brad Little leading Congressman Raul Labrador and Boise developer and physician Tommy Ahlquist. Little has about 37% of the vote, Labrador 33%, Ahlquist 26%. In the Democratic race for governor, Paulette Jordan from the Coeur d’Alene Tribe won more than 58% of the vote in easily defeating Boise businessman A.J. Balukoff.

In the First District Congressional race, the seat Raul Labrador is vacating to run for governor, former Idaho state senator Russ Fulcher (43%) easily defeated six opponents, including former state lieutenant governor and attorney general David Leroy (15%) and Rep. Luke Malek of Coeur d'Alene in the Republican primary. Michael Snyder of Bonners Ferry finished fifth. On the Democratic side, Boise realtor Cristina McNeil has nearly 70% of the vote and a big lead over two opponents.

In the Second District Congressional race, the longtime incumbent, Republican Mike Simpson, was unopposed. His Democratic opponent in November will be Aaron Swisher.

In the race for lieutenant governor, former state Representative Janice McGeachin leads in a close race over former Idaho GOP chairman Steve Yates. They are 1-2 in a five-way race that includes Coeur d’Alene state Senator Bob Nonini. Nonini is running toward the back of the pack.

In other state races: Republican Secretary of State Lawerence Denney was unopposed in his primary. He'll face Democrat Jill Humble, who won a two-way primary. Idaho will have a new treasurer with Ron Crane giving up his seat. Julie Ellsworth (37%) won a close three-way battle with fellow Republicans Tom Kealey (34%) and Vicky McIntyre (29%). Republican Attorney General Lawrence Wasden will look for another term against Democrat Bruce Bistline. For Superintendent of Public Instruction, Republican Sherri Ybarra easily won a primary race against Jeff Dillon; Democrat Cindy Wilson also won her primary. They'll face each other in November. Republican Brandon Woolf was unopposed for state controller.

In legislative results from north Idaho:

District 1: Jim Woodward (52%) leads a three-way Republican field in a race to replace longtime Senator Shawn Keough. Vera Gadman is unopposed in the Democratic primary. Rep. Heather Scott easily beat back a primary challenge from Mike Boeck for one House seat. Democrat Ellen Weissman is way ahead in her race. Her seatmate, Rep. Sage Dixon, is running unopposed for the Republican nomination; he'll face Democrat Stephen Howlett in November.

District 2: In the Senate race, Republican incumbent Steve Vick and Democrat Dale Broadsword were each unopposed. Republican incumbent Vito Barbieri won two-thirds of the vote to defeat challenger Fritz Wiedenhoff; he'll face Democrat Maria Andrews in November for one House seat. The other House seat is open because of Eric Redman's departure. John Green won a close Republican primary race for the right to run against Democrat Alanna Brooks, who also won a contested primary.

District 3:  Republican Senator Bob Nonini ran for lieutenant governor, so this is an open seat. Rep. Don Cheatham ran unopposed in the GOP primary, as did Patrick Lippert in the Democratic primary. For Cheatham's seat, Tony Wisniewski defeated former legislator Kathy Sims for the Republican nod; he'll run against Democrat Dan Hanks in November. In the other House race, Republican Ron Mendive won an unopposed race for a fourth term.

District 4: Republican Senator Mary Souza won nearly 70% of the vote in defeating primary challenger Michael Pereira. She'll face Democrat Cory Jane English in the general election. In one House race, Republican Jim Addis and Democrat Rebecca Schroeder were both unopposed. They will vie to replace Republican Luke Malek, who ran for Congress. Republican Paul Amador defeated challenger Roger Garlock in his bid for re-election. He'll face Democrat Shem Hanks in November.

District 5: Senator Dan Foreman won a close Republican primary race over Marshall Comstock, winning about 51% of the vote. He'll face Democrat David Nelson in November. Democratic Rep. Margie Gannon ran unopposed in her race; her opponent in the general election will be Republican Bill Goesling. Republican Rep. Caroline Nilsson Troy will have a re-election battle against Democrat Laurene Sorensen.

District 6: Republican Senator Dan Johnson won re-election. He was unopposed. Republican Thyra Stevenson was also unopposed for her House seat. Republican Mike Kingsley was unopposed for the Republican nomination for his House seat; he'll face the man he defeated in 2016, former six-term Rep. John Rusche.
