Rep. Jacquelin Maycumber (R-Republic), who was appointed to her seat early in the 2017 session, won an election last November to keep the seat until the next general election, which is three months from now. Her opponent is Democrat Randy Michaelis.
“I’ve been working on NEWERA, which is the Northeast Washington Economic Revitalization Alliance," Maycumber said. "It’s working on legislation through local, state and city officials, together, bipartisan, and coming up with legislation that would help the district become sustainable and have economic viability. It’s working together as a team to really come up with solutions for the district and it’s been great.”
When we spoke to her this week, she had just returned from a one-month fellowship at Harvard, where she and other rural legislators from around the country had talked about how to bring more high-speed broadband connectivity to their small towns.

Michaelis is an interim dean in the School of Education at Whitworth University. Education and access to health care, especially mental health, are his top priorities.
