Fire crews are making progress on the fire that has scorched about 40,000 acres of the Colville Indian Reservation.
“We’ve had rain on and off today. Our temperatures are cooler and we’re just now starting to clear this afternoon," said Elizabeth Shepard, one of the people briefing reporters about the Williams Flats Fire, burning near Keller, Washington.
“Fire officials are looking at this as an opportunity to maybe scout some lines, maybe get a little more direct where the areas are cool, maybe tie in some of our dozer lines to our hand lines and just really, as they say, make some hay on these few days when we’ve got the weather working in our favor,” she said.
Shepard says the meteorologist on site says there could be a bit more rain this evening, but the active weather day will be tomorrow [Saturday], with windy conditions, and potentially rain and/or lightning.
Evacuation notices that were in effect yesterday haven’t changed. Shepard says no structures have burned because of this fire and there’s no imminent danger to any buildings.
