Interview with Weiling Zhu

Spokane Chinese Association previews their SAGA-supported Lunar New Year event

Spokane Chinese Association (SCA) President Weiling Zhu talks with E.J. Iannelli about the history of the organization's Chinese Lunar New Year celebration and their plans for 2023.

In 2020, the SCA's annual Lunar New Year celebration was one of the first major local event cancellations on account of the pandemic. The organization has been maintaining a limited event schedule since then for the same reasons.

Through funding from a recent Spokane Arts Grant Award (SAGA), the SCA intends to "go big" for the official resumption of its Lunar New Year celebration in 2023. Both the cultural fair and the live dance and martial arts performances will move into Spokane's historic Fox Theater, where the SCA will take advantage of the additional lobby space and the professional performing arts stage.

The event is scheduled to take place on January 15, 2023.

SAGA is an annual competitive grant process administered by Spokane Arts. It’s on track this year to allocate nearly $150,000 in financial support directly to artists and organizations.
