From the Studio: Spokane 2023 Lunar New Year Celebration

The Spokane Chinese Association's Weiling Zhu previews their most ambitious event yet

Spokane Chinese Association President Weiling Zhu came into the KPBX studio to tell E.J. Iannelli about her organization's Spokane 2023 Lunar New Year Celebration, which takes place this Sunday (Jan. 15).

The event consists of two parts: an afternoon (1pm–4pm) cultural fair with free admission and a ticketed evening (5pm onward) event with live performances.

The cultural fair will feature family-friendly activities like Chinese calligraphy and painting, a Lunar New Year photo booth, cuisine sampling and many cultural booths. The evening show will feature classic Chinese folk dances, a Chinese choir, tai chi, Peking Opera, the Lion Dance as well as Chinese music performed on traditional instruments.

This marks the first time that the event will be held at The Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox. The shift to the large, historic venue will give them access to a better performance space and a clearer division between the cultural fair and the live performances.

The Spokane Chinese Association received Spokane Arts Grant Award (SAGA) funding during the second application round of 2022 to support the event. An earlier interview on that can be found here.

For tickets, visit the Fox Theater website. And for more information about the Spokane Chinese Association, head to the SCA website.
