Directors and cast members discuss the Dr. Seuss-inspired all-ages musical

Members of Spokane Children’s Theatre joined E.J. Iannelli in the KPBX studio to talk about their new production of Seussical: The Musical, which opens this Friday.

SCT Executive Director Tanya Brownlee and John Tomkowiak, the show's assistant director, were accompanied by cast members CJ Pieroni and Avery Hudson. Pieroni is a longtime SCT participant who is playing Horton the elephant. Hudson is a younger actor who is playing the bird Gertrude McFuzz.

Seussical: The Musical is based largely on the characters and stories in Horton Hears a Who!, Gertrude McFuzz and Horton Hatches the Egg, although it incorporates many of the other characters in Dr. Seuss' beloved books. It takes place in a fantasy world called The Jungle of Nool that is dreamed up by Jojo (Brigid Sheehan), who is encouraged by the Cat in the Hat (Tyson Fletcher).

Brownlee and Tomkowiak discussed the production and the creative team behind it. Pieroni and Hudson gave some insight into their roles, the music and the show's message.

Seussical: The Musical opens this Friday (Mar. 10) at the Spokane Children’s Theatre and runs until Sunday, March 26. There is an ASL interpreted performance on March 12.

Tickets, directions and and showtimes are at the Spokane Children's Theatre website or by calling (509) 328-4886.
