RTOP Presents: Camelot
RTOP Presents: Camelot
Beginning September 12 and running through September 22, Lerner and Loewe’s classic Broadway musical, Camelot, will stage at the Regional Theatre of the Palouse (RTOP). Inspired by the legend of King Arthur and adapted from T.H. White’s The Once and Future King, Camelot is the story of King Arthur’s meteoric rise and spectacular fall.
Lyricist and librettist Alan Jay Lerner and composer Frederick Loewe were already the toast of Broadway, with such successes as Brigadoon, Paint Your Wagon, and My Fair Lady. Then Lerner chanced upon The Once and Future King and felt it was destined for the theater. It took some convincing to make Loewe see its potential. Fortunately for the world, Loewe came around and Camelot glowed for far more than “one brief shining moment"; with 873 performances on Broadway; productions across the U.S., Canada and England; and innumerable revivals, concerts and gala productions. Its rich and memorable score includes: “I Loved You Once in Silence”, “If Ever I Would Leave You,” and “Camelot.”
Camelot is an enchanting tale, with Knights of the Round Table overlapping with the love triangle that is Arthur, Lancelot, and Guinevere.
Moscow ID resident Dennis McGreevy, who will star as King Arthur, has a long history with the Regional Theatre of the Palouse. He performed in several RTOP productions over the years, including Les Miserables (Jean Valjean), Secret Garden (Archibald Craven), and is currently pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in theatre from The University of Idaho. And it’s all in the family: Dennis' children are pursuing careers in the arts and they cite RTOP as their inspiration. “RTOP means so much to me and to my family, both years ago and again, today. Just call me The Once and Future King.” - McGreevy.
RTOP’s production of Lerner & Loewe's Camelot is directed by theatre professional and Palouse native Michael Todd. Community board member Tina McClure serves as musical director, WSU graduate Gavin Hamilton is choreographer. Costume design is by John Rich, assisted by Juliann Yusko.
