Take Back the Night (TBTN)
Take Back the Night (TBTN)
This event will feature powerful speakers, community resources, dinner, dessert, zines and other crafts, a walk in solidarity and door prizes. This student-led event is open to the public and free to attend. Take Back the Night is designed to spread awareness surrounding sexual violence, and to support survivors. This year’s event is being put on by students, in connection with the Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Whitworth.
Take Back the Night originated in the 1970s and is the oldest worldwide movement to stand against sexual violence in all forms. The earliest TBTN activists protested the lack of safety for women, and throughout the years, events developed that began to target cultural, religious and governmental limitations on victims’ rights. TBTN operates on the belief that it is important to spread awareness about sexual assault on college campuses because when students and other attendees know that sexual assault is being talked about and taken seriously, survivors are more likely to come forward, seek support and feel less isolated.
