Nearly 200 Candidates File For Public Office in Spokane County

Rebecca White/SPR

Spokane County’s filing week closed with nearly 198 candidates filing for 122 public offices.

A few elections drew a significant number of candidates. Spokane Public School Board has two open positions and 13 people filed. Neither incumbent Jerrall Haynes or Aryn Ziehnert have filed to run.

Four Spokane Valley City Council seats are up for election, and 13 people have filed for them, with incumbents Ben Wick, Pam Haley, and Linda Thompson each facing multiple challengers.

Spokane County Auditor Vicky Dalton said the number of people who filed was on par with normal. She said people who missed the deadline can file for seats that no one filed for. There were 28 public positions that drew no candidates.

“For those offices that nobody filed for, we will have a special filing period that will run from August 4, to August 6.”

If people change their mind about running for office, they can withdraw on Monday. They’re filing fee however will not be refunded.
