STA Breaks Ground On Transit Center At Spokane Community College

Spokane Transit

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Tuesday for the Spokane Community College Transit Center.

Transit officials say the center will allow for better connection to Spokane, Spokane Valley and Millwood.

CEO Susan Meyer says the center will be a real benefit for SCC students.

“This is a big hub of student activity. Dr. Johnson told us there are 20,000 students here. The ridership at the community colleges is nearly as high as Eastern Washington University. So it is added service, added convenience. It is a connection point, if you are coming to SCC, if you’re connecting to go to the valley, to Millwood, to other locations, there are connections here to take you to the rest of the area," she said.

The new Central City Line, which will include SCC, will utilize 10 all electric buses. They will be charged overnight at the bus barn on Boone, then also give a brief recharge at the SCC Transit Center as well.

The new Transit Center will feature improved pedestrian connections, more passenger amenities and real time signage.

The cost of the project is 5 million dollars, of which 3 million came from a state competitive grant, and the remainder from a public tax that was approved by voters in 2016.

The SCC Transit Center will open later this year.
