Classical guitarist Leon Atkinson joins Verne Windham in the KPBX studio for an hour of live and recorded music.

Verne and Leon were joined in the studio today by two special guests, local guitarists Larry Almeida and Paul Grove.

The 2019 "Friends of the Guitar Hour" concert series will feature Almeida at the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center in Post Falls this Friday at 7:30 PM.

This annual Christmas edition of the Guitar Hour featured live performances of Christmas favorites and modern holiday songs by the Sandpoint High School Choir, under the direction of Jon Brownell.

In addition, two students of Leon's, Naomi Anderson and Jacob Atencio, each performed solo classical guitar pieces.

Leon Atkinson and Verne welcomed John Paul Shields to the studio today, to pay tribute to Raúl García Zárate, who passed away at the end of October. 

The Friends of the Guitar Hour concert series will feature John Goulart at the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center on March 24 at 7:30pm. This morning Goulart joined Verne and Leon in the studio for a preview of the show.

Award-winning flamenco guitarist Joaquin Gallegos and dancer Monica Mota visited The Guitar Hour to preview their upcoming show, Flamenco Pasión.  Mota is also the show's producer.  Flamenco Pasión is at Ella's Theater in downtown Spokane at 7p.m. on February 11, 7p.m. 

Marc Teicholz paid a visit to The Guitar Hour this morning to preview his concert tonight, February 9, at 7pm at the Gonzaga University Chapel.  Teichold is a internationally acclaimed classical guitarist who teaches at the San Francisco Conservatory as well as at the California Summer Arts Festival and the Weatherfield Music Festival in Vermont.

To get us all in the holiday spirit, Leon invited the Sandpoint High School Chamber Choir and guitarist Paul Grove to the studio this morning for his annual Christmas show. 

It's time for the annual Brad Richter concert, which means we had the pleasure of having him in the studio with Leon and Verne for today's Guitar Hour program.  Brad will be playing a concert with cellist Viktor Uzur tomorrow, Friday, October 14th at 7:00pm at the Jacklin Arts and Culture Center.

The Guitar Hour: Alex DeGrassi and Andrew York

The Guitar Hour featured two guest artists today--Alex DeGrassi and Andrew York.  They are both here as featured guitarists as part of the Friends of the Guitar Hour concert series, hosted by Leon Atkinson.  They will play tonight, Thursday, March 24th at 7:30pm.

It's that time of year, and Leon and Verne know all too well that you want your holiday music fix. They did not disappoint in Leon's Annual Christmas Show this week.  Leon was joined by a guest even, and we were lucky to have guitarist Paul Grove join us in the studio. Paul is on faculty at Gonzaga University and teaches applied guitar.

Today on The Guitar Hour, Leon Atkinson hosted the South Hill Guitar Duo, who will be performing tonight (Thursday) at Gonzaga University.  The duo includes classical guitarists James Reid and John Paul Shields.  They played several selections in the studio and talked with Leon and Verne about the concert tonight, including how they switch lead from piece to piece, creating a truly equal partnership.

  Today, Leon and Verne welcomed classical guitarist Brad Richter to the studio for a live guitar hour performance.  Brad comes to town every year for his performance at the Jacklin Arts and Cultural Center in Post Falls, Idaho.  He's back again, and his concert is tomorrow  night (Friday) at 7:00pm with cellist Viktor Uzur.  He gave us a preview of that concert as well as a compelling discussion with Leon and Verne about his past experiences and thoughts on all things guitar.

On his June 25 program, Leon Atkinson shares memories of working with Gunther Schuller, who passed away over the past weekend.

Classical guitar students under the direction of John Paul Shields, from Spokane Falls Community College performed as a quartet this morning in the KPBX studio. Guitar Hour host, Leon Atkinson spoke with each about their influences and inspiration.

With Christmas one week away, Leon Atkinson invites the Sandpoint High School Choir and the Powell Brothers back to the studio for the annual Guitar Christmas Party.

Harvest Home is produced and hosted by Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, a husband and wife duo who won international acclaim for music on PBS's Civil War documentary.

The songs featured on this special program culled from Jay and Molly's archive of traditional and historical American recordings. Artists include Chet Atkins, Bill Monroe, Pete Seeger, and Merle Haggard.  The songs all have a theme of autumn, Thanksgiving, and of course food!

This Thursday, Oct. 2, The Guitar Hour starts at 10 a.m. for a two-hour KPBX special. Guests Alex de Grassi and Brad Richter perform, plus host Leon Atkinson previews the Harp Guitar Convention taking place that weekend in Coeur d'Alene. "We have all these people representing the wonderful guitar events taking place in the region, and we'll be able to have these great artists interacting on the radio," says co-host Verne Windham.
