City Sells Building to MLK Jr. Kids Center

The city of Spokane sold a building in east Spokane today, and in doing so gave more freedom to a youth center. The Martin Luther King Junior Family Outreach Center operates a pre-school and an after school program.

Frieda Gandy: “We exist to improve the quality of life for children, youth, and families, through an array of culturally responsive, educational, and social services all within the framework of Dr. King’s vision.

Executive Director FriedaGandy says they operate a pre-school at the center now, and an after school program at an elementary school. They hope to move that program to the center on Sherman, and expand in other ways now that they own the building.

The center has put $123,000 into it for repairs already. That will go towards the city’s 132-thousand dollar purchase price. Gandy says they will be able to have eligibility for more grants and state resources now that they own the building on Sherman Street.
