Wes Jessup and Anne-Claire Mitchell talk American Impressionism & Lila Shaw Girvin

The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (MAC) is about to open two fall shows—one featuring American Impressionists, the other featuring Spokane artist Lila Shaw Girvin.

Anne-Claire Mitchell, who's curating the Lila Shaw Girvin exhibition, and MAC Executive Director Wes Jessup joined E.J. Iannelli in the KPBX studio to discuss both exhibitions and give audiences a taste of what to expect.

American Impressionism: Treasures from the Daywood Collection is a nationally touring exhibition that showcases 41 paintings from the Daywood Collection of the Huntington Museum of Art. The artwork dates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries and includes pieces by Robert Henri, John Twachtman, Willard Metcalf and Gari Melchers.

The Lila Shaw Girvin exhibition, titled “Gift of a Moment,” is a full gallery with 18 of the local artist's paintings. It offers a nearly 60-year retrospective of work by Girvin, a prominent figure in the Inland Northwest art community who embraced styles like abstract expressionism. She continues to work today at the age of 92.

Both exhibitions open Sunday, October 9, 2022. American Impressionism: Treasures from the Daywood Collection runs until January 8, 2023. Gift of a Moment: Lila Shaw Girvin runs until March 12, 2023.

Dancing with Life: Mexican Masks, which just opened at the MAC in September, will continue to run alongside these exhibitions. You can listen to our interview about that exhibition here.
