The director and cast offer insight into John Logan's play about the painter Mark Rothko

Raymond Horn, Jamie Flanery and Dawn Taylor-Reinhardt joined E.J. Iannelli in the KPBX studio to talk about the play Red. A new production of the play opens this weekend at Stage Left Theater.

Red draws inspiration from an actual event in the artist Mark Rothko's life. He was commissioned in 1958 to paint a series of murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in the new Seagrams Building in New York City. But Rothko was deeply conflicted about the commission because many aspects of it were at odds with his ideals about art.

Taylor-Reinhardt is directing this production of John Logan’s play, Flanery is appearing in it as the artist Mark Rothko; Horn plays his fictional assistant, Ken.

During this interview, the trio discussed some of the concepts that the play broaches as well as technical considerations such as lighting and sound design. Flanery and Horn also performed a short scene and a monologue that deal with the play's titular color.

Red opens this Friday (April 7) and runs until April 23 at Stage Left Theater. Tickets and more information are available by visiting the venue's website.
