Dec. 22, 2022: Inlander arts, Native music & more

This week's TA(P) touches on Native music, opera and alt-weekly arts coverage

This week's episode of the Thursday Arts (P)review — where the "p" is parenthetical because we look both forward and back — includes the following:

  • An interview with Chey Scott, a who was recently promoted to arts and culture editor at the Inlander. She recaps what she's been doing at the print alt-weekly for the past decade, what her new job entails and which trends in the local art scene she's keeping an eye on.
  • An extended version of a previously aired interview by SPR's Doug Nadvornick with singer/songwriter Kelly Derrickson, who recently won the Best Folk/Americana Recording Award for her song “I Am Mother Nature” at this year’s Native American Music Awards.
  • An interview with Melody Heaton — mezzo-soprano, Inland Northwest Opera's director of marketing and now executive director of the Asian Opera Alliance as well. She talks about her new role and the AOA's mission.
  • A short encore performance of "Carol of the Bells" from a holiday flute mini-recital broadcast live from the SPR studio earlier this week.

Grooving to the intro music? It's "Those Girls" by Maceo Parker.

The Thursday Arts (P)review airs every Thursday at 12pm on KPBX with a roundup of arts-related news and information from across the Inland Northwest.
