Three poets. Three voices in harmony.

Join us for an evening of poetry featuring visiting poet Pamela Wax*, author of 'Every Single Beast of My Heart'. Pamela will be reading from her new collection alongside two local poets, Mery Smith (Spokane's current Poet Laureate) and Laura Read (former Spokane Poet Laureate and author of 'The Serious World'). With work exploring the complexities of memory, identity, family, loss, connection and the strange and beautiful details of everyday life, this reading is sure to spark meaningful conversation.

*Pamela is the author of two previous poetry collections, Walking the Labyrinth (Main Street Rag, 2022) and Starter Mothers (Finishing Line Press, 2023). Her poems, published in over 60 literary journals, have received three Best of the Net nominations and awards from Crosswinds, Paterson Literary Review, Poets’ Billow, Oberon, the Ruben Rose Memorial Poetry Competition, and the Robinson Jeffers Tor House.

Author Peter Heller returns to the Northwest Passages Book Club to discuss his bestselling novel, “The Dog Stars,” and the book’s journey from page to big-screen thriller directed by Ridley Scott.

Heller will be in conversation Sept. 10 with Pulitzer Prize-winning author Edward Humes at the Bing Crosby Theater.

“The Dog Stars” centers around Hig, a pilot who lives in an abandoned airport hangar with his dog and an ex-marine after an epidemic devastates the planet. When Hig intercepts a random radio transmission, he leaves their compound believing that somewhere humanity still exists.

“The Dog Stars” adaptation is set for release Aug. 28 in theaters. Ridley Scott, whose previous films include “The Martian,” “Alien,” “Blade Runner” and “Gladiator,” is directing and producing the film. The cast includes Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin and Margaret Qualley.

Author Meghan Jones is a local artist with a focus on the deep sea. In 2025 Meghan co-founded the Unseen Ocean Collective; a trailblazing group of four women, three artists and a scientist, dedicated to revealing the beauty and wonder of the deep-sea through international art and science outreach events. Meghan took her skills and created this children's book!

Between four and seven miles deep, the ocean—where pressure is one ton per square centimeter—evokes both mystery and misunderstanding; accessing these depths is challenging to human exploration. Our fear of this dark unknown often conjures images of monsters of the deep, especially in the minds of children. Based on current scientific observations and studies, this book demonstrates that reality can be more fascinating than the wildest imagination all while traveling from the shore to the deepest of ocean trenches. Along the way it introduces children to twenty of the most unusual creatures to inhabit the oceans, including bone-eating worms, supergiant amphipods with expanding stomachs, snails made of iron, worms that eat chemicals and even hagfish who can suffocate on their own slime. This book will excite a new generation of ocean explorers who can take their piqued interest and become a much needed movement for deep ocean stewardship.

Written for independent readers from ages 8-12, but enjoyable by everyone!
