Symphony Week 2016: The Bird Callers of Spokane

The second of today's Symphony Week interviews started off with Music Director Eckart Preu and finished with something quite unique.  Eckart talked with Verne about his goings-on the last few months and the exciting things to come from the Spokane Symphony this season.  Following that, we had two of Spokane's finest bird callers, Simone Ramel-McKay and Tom Askman.  Both of them will be special soloists in this weekends upcoming season opener for the Spokane Symphony's performance of Ottorino Resphighi's Pines of Rome.  Instead of the traditionally recorded Italian nightingales, this performance will be the only one of its kind to feature the sounds of Spokane birds, as performed by these two bird callers.  They demonstrated their skills for us in the studio.

Symphony Week 2016 is a week-long series of feature interviews with various staff, musicians, and listeners of the Spokane Symphony leading up to their season opener, which happens this weekend, September 17-18 at the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox.

Verne Windham got his start at Spokane Public Radio 20 years ago. “I came in to complain and they hired me.” He’s now the Program Director, as well as the host of Morning Classical and Concert of the Week. When choosing music for Morning Classical, Verne likes to keep the agenda as broadly defined as possible. For Concert of the Week, he focuses on the best of recent local performances, mostly classical in nature. For many years, Verne was also the conductor of the Spokane Youth Orchestra. He enjoys gardening, his vintage car and playing French horn.
