On this week’s show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender, and Mary Pat Treuthart run down their picks for what each of them thought were the best films of the last year. They also list some of the rest of what they thought made 2023 the year that it was, for good and bad.

Since premiering at South by Southwest, the R-rated teen comedy “Bottoms” has been pegged as a future cult classic. Nathan Weinbender says it’s not as great as its inspirations, but it’s a funny, well-cast oddity.

On this week’s show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender, and Mary Pat Treuthart discuss one of those projects, the Bradley Cooper film “Maestro,” which Cooper didn’t just direct and co-write, but which he also stars in the title role as the late Leonard Bernstein. They discuss, too, a Netflix release, “Leave the World Behind,” that stars not just one, but two past Oscar winners, Julia Roberts and Mahershala Ali.

On this week’s show, Dan Webster, Nathan Weinbender, and Mary Pat Treuthart will be discussing a trio of films featuring LGBTQ+ characters. First up is the American teen comedy “Bottoms,” followed by two foreign efforts: Morocco’s “The Blue Caftan” and England’s “Blue Jean.”

Martin McDonagh has made some very good movies, like “In Bruges,” and some wildly uneven movies, like “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” Nathan Weinbender says McDonagh’s latest, “The Banshees of Inisherin” is his best film, and a small masterpiece of tragicomedy.
